Rises in the Park Range, SW Jackson co., N Colo., at joining of Grizzly and Little Grizzly creeks, near Continental Divide, 23 mi/37 km SSW of Walden, Colo.; flows N into Wyo., past Saratoga, through Seminos, Pathfinder, and Alcova reservoirs, NE to Casper, then E, past N end of Laramir Mts., SE past Douglas and Torrington, Wyo., Scottsbluff, Bridgeport, and Oshkosh, Nebr., through L.C.W. McConaughy Reservoir (N of Ogallala), then joining South Platte at city of North Platte to form Platte R., lower 80 mi/129 km nearly parallels South Platte R. The North Platte project and the Kendrick project utilize the North Platteā€™s water for power and irrigation. Kingsley Dam (170 ft/52 m high and 3.4 mi/5.5 km long; completed 1942) near Ogallala, Nebr., is one of many dams on the river, and there are also large reservoirs. The valley of the North Platte was a chief route used by W-bound pioneers. Fort Laramie Natl. Historic Site is on the river near the mouth of the Laramie R.
